Consumption is a necessity for living. Food, entertainment, shelter; we consume many things. It’s hard to live without consuming.
For some people, consumption defines who they are. Swifties are Taylor Swift Fans, Red Devils are Manchester United Fans, and bookworm just read a lot of books.
There is nothing inherently wrong with consumption. But, there is nothing great about it either.
Consumption takes zero effort. Everybody is doing it. After all, it’s hard to live without consuming.
Even if you don’t want to consume a lot, you will be decieved into it. Consumer Capitalism traps us into over-consuming. Fast fashion, fast food, fast entertainment; the economy thrives with consumption.
We are taught that happiness is based on consumption. As soon as we buy that car, own that house, or have that body, we will be happy. Yet, the consumption never ends.
No matter how much we consume, it doesn’t move us or the world towards a better tomorrow.
Instead of consumption, happiness is found in the quest of production: building, creating, making. Solving problems. If we skip straight to having everything, to maximum consumption, we miss out on the satisfaction that comes from the path of struggle we would have to endure to get there.
Creativity breaks the consumption cycle.
Creating is a mindset. A challenge that requires effort but is worthwhile and rewarding.
So don’t just consume. Create.
