Migrating WordPress Site to New Host using UpdraftPlus Plugin

I noticed a significant amount of lag recently while writing blog posts. I guessed it’s probably due to my website host (5$ per year from HostKoala). I wasn’t sure if I would be regular with blogging, so I opted to use something cheap originally.

With new themes and plugins, I guess it was getting too much for it to handle? So I decided to migrate to a new hosting site. My previous blog ran fine on DozeHost, so I switched to that.

I was worried about migration since I wasn’t sure how much of a pain it would be. Surprisingly, it was smooth sailing thanks to UpdraftPlus. Here is how it went:

  1. On your old website
    • Install the plugin.
    • Connect it to a remote storage site. My UpdraftPlus was connected to my Google Drive back when I started using it for regular backups.
    • Create a manual backup of everything: Database, Plugin, Theme. Select all the options.
  2. On your new website
    • Install the plugin.
    • Connect it to the same remote storage site.
    • Scan for existing backups.
    • Restore the backup.

It’s as simple as that.
