My blog was down for 6 days between 18-23 July 2024. Bangladesh was facing an internet shutdown due to protests at the time. My hosting provider Doze Host, a Bangladeshi company, had their data center in Dhaka impacted. Since I didn’t use a separate domain and hosting provider, I lost access to both when they became unresponsive.
I learned two lessons about hosting with this experience:
- Don’t manage both your domain and web hosting using the same provider. If the provider becomes unresponsive you lose both of them. By splitting them away, you can at least salvage one of them.
- Domain management is more important if you are already backing up your blog regularly. If web hosting becomes unavailable, as long as you have control over your DNS management, you can simply redirect your domain to a new web hosting. Just migrate your blog using the existing backup.
I have switched to using Porkbun as my new provider. The transfer is still in progress but it should be completed soon.
